Omega & Andrew
Andrew is Ghanaian, while Omega is of Jamaican and Bajan descent, so they incorporated a blend of their cultures throughout their planning, including music selections, food, clothing and various traditions.
Seven days before a gorgeous western wedding, this couple hosted a Ghanaian wedding, where 100 guests witnessed their engagement. The bride wore a kente dress designed by her father (he also designed her graduation and prom dresses!). The bridal party also wore customized kente wear. The event featured traditional drums and Ghanaian dancers.
One week later, a Western ceremony and reception took place. The theme was “Royal Wedding” and featured white, ivory and gold décor, with pops of burgundy and greenery.
Here’s what Omega had to say:
What was your favourite part of the day? My favorite part about the wedding day was walking down the aisle with my father, surrounded by friends and family, staring into my soon to be husband’s eyes. It was a moment I simply cannot forget, and the emotion that consumed me is unexplainable.
Tell us about any unique aspects: It was important to embed our culture throughout our wedding ceremonies. It was unique for us to have two weddings a week apart and to blend our cultures through song, food, dance and even attire.
Did anything go wrong? What wedding goes without a hitch? Andrew purchased these wedding shoes online and they arrived a week before the wedding. He was really excited about them, so he brought them with him to his final fitting. When he returned home, he couldn’t seem to find them. So he thought perhaps he left them at the bridal shop. We headed back over only to find out they weren’t there. Instead, we found them separated in the street. Andrew had put them on top of the car and drove off, and the shoes were absolutely destroyed! His Brother and Best Man ordered a different pair as we wouldn’t have enough time for the one’s he wanted to come in. It was a bit of a nightmare to say the least!
Ok….one more story. This one takes the cake. Andrew and I had my wedding ring cleaned before the wedding. When we went back to pick it up, the ring shop claimed that their shop was robbed and the ring was gone. Let’s just say…the police got involved….it was a whole mess and my wedding ring “replacement” was not even sized on my wedding day. The show must go on right?
If you could have done anything different, what would you have changed? I wouldn’t change much. I was really happy with the turn-out. Everything was really amazing. I would probably just dedicate more time to our wedding photos, and try to remember to eat!
What will your guests remember most? My guests will remember the hospitality. The food was amazing, the dessert table was phenomenal, open bar is a must and the entertainment was unmatched. Everybody still raves about how amazing our wedding was, and they felt like they were at a concert.
Honeymoon? We did take a honeymoon, to embark on our new journey. We decided to spend our time together the same way we met. Partying! We headed to Miami to party together for 10 days! It was the time of our lives; to feel like a young teenager again with my new husband.
Advice to couples planning their wedding? Do your day your way. It is your vision, and ultimately your memories. Budget for every item, and get creative to help save costs where required!!
